Cycling Counts

2025-09-30

Cycling Counts, commissioned by the Commission’s Directorate General for Mobility & Transport (DG MOVE), aims to define and assess EU-wide cycling data and methodologies, covering infrastructure, usage, services, and safety.

On behalf of Mobilissimus, Antal Gertheis supports the project as member of the Expert Advisory Board, based on his experience on working with cycling data from structured field surveys by bicycle (being a EuroVelo Route Inspector) to the processing and use of official databases (available at the National Access Points or provided on request by the national authorities) and open data alike, including experience in working with GIS software; as well as from contributing as a volunteer and playing a coordinating role between the community, route managers and application developers on mapping cycle routes and infrastructure on OpenStretMap in Hungary.

The role encompasses the review of deliverables on data entities and definitions, indicators and proposed calculation methods, as well as key data sources, both in writing and at workshops with the project team and fellow Expert Advisory Board members. At a later stage, methodologies for data collection and for progress monitoring to establish a comprehensive and standardised data management framework for cycling data across Europe will be also reviewed, covering aspects such as

  • operational aspects of cycling data management,
  • comprehensive methodology for the harmonised collection of cycle network data, also using open cycle network data across Europe, and
  • description/definition of a dataset to describe the baseline of the cycle network.

Cycling Counts invites contributions from diverse stakeholders to gather reliable data and improve cycling methodologies across Europe.
