Cycling in Europe in numbers: key insights published

2026-06-15

Cycling Counts, commissioned by the European Commission’s Directorate General for Mobility & Transport (DG MOVE), aimed to define and assess EU-wide cycling data and methodologies, covering infrastructure, usage, services, and safety.

On behalf of Mobilissimus, Antal Gertheis supported the project as member of the Expert Advisory Board, based on his experience on working with cycling data in practice. The role encompassed the review of deliverables on data entities and definitions, indicators and proposed calculation methods, and key data sources; as well as on methodologies for data collection and for progress monitoring to establish a comprehensive and standardised data management framework for cycling data across Europe.

The Commission has now validated and published the final report: Study on current state and possible development of European Union cycling infrastructure, revealing the results of this milestone study. European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF), member of the consortium consisting of ECF, European Cycling Industries, Rupprecht Consult, Transport & Mobility Leuven and Eurocities, highlights a few key insights in its summary, including:

  • 974 000 km of extended cycle network (a 16% coverage of the total road network), consisting of 343 000 km of dedicated cycling infrastructure and around the double of that of 30 km/h and limited traffic roads;
  • 24% of the EU population cycling at least once a week for mobility purposes (ranging between 1% and 61% by member state);
  • 7,8% modal share of cycling in the EU;
  • 1,13 fatalities per 100 million kilometres cycled on average;
  • 71% of cities over 150 000 inhabitants having bike sharing systems in place, with a total fleet size of over 300 000 bikes.
