A constantly growing number of people live in urban areas, and economic activities are also increasingly concentrated in cities. At the same time, mobility generates additional difficulties in urban areas, and it has numerous negative impacts such as congestion, air and noise pollution and accidents.
It is crucial for urban areas that the inhabitants, workers and tourists can use a comfortable, liveable, modern and safe mobility system which is cost-efficient and eco-friendly, allowing travellers of different transport modes to coexist. To find the solution for these issues, transport planning should apply an up-to-date approach and methodology: this is why sustainable urban mobility planning – SUMP – is now integral to European transport policy making.
Our aim is to contribute to the realization of a new approach for the development of transport systems planned for the needs of the people, taking into account the national circumstances and the local strategic planning objectives.
What are the advantages of sustainable urban mobility planning?
- The planning is based on the needs of the inhabitants and all who use the city.
- It provides input for local transport policy making, and supports future decisions.
- It harmonizes the objectives of the city and other sectors.
- It supports the intelligent and cost-efficient use of available economic sources at the European, national or local level to contribute to city development objectives.
- It establishes a basis for actions and projects.
- It helps the city to access European funds.
- It improves communication among the stakeholders.
