Background
Nyíregyháza’s Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan was developed in 2016 by Mobilissimus. The city’s transportation system is undergoing a transformation; the previous system, which was clearly based on private cars, is no longer sustainable here in many respects. Recognizing the problem, the city’s leadership is placing increasing emphasis on alternatives to car use.
Bringing local public transport up to 21st-century standards was already identified as a development priority in the 2016 SUMP. Mobilissimus was also responsible for designing the new bus network. The process began at the end of 2019, but the planning process was disrupted by the Covid19 pandemic, so a new temporary network and schedule were first implemented on May 1, 2020, offering new travel options and fewer transfers to the public.
The SUMP revision
Mobilissimus also conducted the revision of the plan. Our task was to describe and assess the current transportation situation; based on this, we reviewed and evaluated both existing and new projects.
Both rail and regional bus services in and around the city are of high quality, and the first steps toward integration have already been taken. Given the city’s characteristics, rail can play a role in long-distance transportation, while regional buses will certainly remain dominant in serving the city’s outskirts.
Several of the previous SUMP projects have been implemented (such as the development of certain bicycle routes, the renovation of sidewalk sections, the renewal of the local bus network, and road improvements), while there remains a need to further develop the cycling network, further improve the local bus network, prioritize buses, and develop infrastructure related to new industrial areas. The scope of some projects has been slightly modified.
