The role of communication in mobility

Mobilissimus has participated at the final conference of the SMARTMOVE Project on the 22nd of June 2016 in Cologne.

In the frames of the project a new methodology has been developed with the aim of promoting public and eco-friendly transport modes. The essential of the approach called AMC – Active Mobility Consultancy – is the active involvement of the users of the transport system in the communication process via direct modes (traditional and electronic direct marketing as well as face-to-face dialogues) and indirect channels (websites, social media).

This approach distinguishes the communication which aims to convince people and to gain new passengers and the informative communication through which detailed customized information can be provided to special target groups.

The method AMC was applied with success in eight European cities within the frames of the project. The participant cities had different issues to be solved, but the objective was the same: to increase the modal split of public and eco-friendly transport modes. In all cases, special target groups were addressed and tailor-made content and modes of communication were designed, all based on the local problems and objectives.

Thanks to the guideline document prepared as a result of the project, the methodological elements of the AMC approach can be adapted to other European areas – like Hungarian cities as well. Nevertheless, it has to be underlined that active communication can have positive impacts only in case of the provision of high level services – hence in most of the participant cities, the relevant transport services had been developed before the launch of the communication campaign.

As it can be seen on the pictures, the city of Cologne was a perfect place for this conference: the liveable public spaces of the old town and the new parts, the well-designed network, the comfort and the modernity of the public transport system are all providing good examples for the participant cities.
