Options for managing through traffic in the Alsópismány and Egres Road areas of Szentendre: conceptual plan

2026-02-10

In recent years, the City of Szentendre has commissioned conceptual plans for certain city districts (such as the Vasúti villasor street and its surroundings, the Szent András kindergarten and its surroundings, the Hamvas Béla and Széchenyi Square areas, and Sas Street and its surroundings) in search of solutions to local traffic problems. In 2025, the focus shifted to the Egres Road area, where the congestion and inadequate functioning of the area’s internal roads, certain intersections, and connections to the Dunakanyar Boulevard are well known. This study involved examining and verifying previously proposed solutions and known problems, while also proposing new ideas, based in part on peak-hour traffic counts. The following tasks were completed:

•    conducting traffic counts to assess the traffic situation,

•    conceptual options for constructing a connecting road between the northern section of Egres Road and Sztaravodai Road,

•    examination of signalized intersections connecting the area to the Dunakanyar Boulevard,

•    examination of the area’s major roads and problematic intersections,

•    sidewalk improvements.

On the 15 October 2025, a broad municipal consultation took place, during which the conceptual proposals were discussed and subsequently approved in principle. On 14 January 2026, a preliminary consultation was held with representatives of Hungarian Public Roads regarding proposals affecting national roads.

While expressing a positive stance, Hungarian Public Roads requested that detailed traffic engineering plans be prepared for the purpose of the official review. On the 20–21 January 2026, nearly 50 residents of Szentendre shared their opinions in four focus groups, and the results were incorporated into the final proposals.
